My name is Hal Martens and I am the owner of Barrier Island Home Watch. As a Lowcountry Native, I have fond memories of growing up on the Isle of Palms and exploring the surrounding backwaters. After graduating from Winthrop University, I spent 35 plus years in the textile industry moving across the country and at times, around the world. I always seemed to return home to the Lowcounty and the Isle of Palms.
One of the things I noticed after returning to Charleston permanently is the tremendous development of communities catering to second homeowners. Many of these homes are left unoccupied when the owners return to their permanent residences or leave for several weeks or even months at a time. During these times, there are things that can occur resulting in thousands of dollars in damage that, depending on the terms of their insurance policy, may or may not be covered.
Property Management or House Sitters
Seeing a gap in the services of property management companies and house sitters, I realized there is a move effective and less intrusive way to serve absentee homeowners. What I noticed was:
- Property managers are more concerned with getting a vacant property rented than they are with checking your unoccupied home.
- House sitters are looking for a place to stay more than a place to take care of in your absence. AND they are in your home 24/7 with access to every nook and cranny of your home.
Barrier Island Home Watch is designed to fill that gap. We provide home checks weekly or bi-weekly to identify any problems or potential problems. We report those findings and work with the homeowner’s guidance to mitigate any problems. Additionally, we offer pre/post storm checks for peace of mind during the hurricane season.
